Back to Home Fibromyalgia, sometimes shortened to Fibro, is a disorder classified by the presence of chronic widespread pain. It has been studied since the early 1800s, but the term was coined in 1976 to describe the symptoms, from the Latin fibra (fiber) and the Greek words myo (muscle) and algos (pain).
Other symptoms include, fatigue, allodynia, which is increased sensitivity the skin, aching of the muscles, muscle spasms, weakness of the limbs, and nerve pain.
Many patients also experience a condition known as " brain fog" or "fibrofog", which results in lack of concentration, short-term memory loss, and impaired motor skills. Experts believe this is related to sleep disturbances suffered by those with fibro.
These symptoms can have a slow onset, with some beginning in childhood, and sometimes misdiagnosed as growing pains. While the cause is unknown, it can be the result of trauma, major surgery, disease, or stress. Anti-inflammatory medications can be used in treatment.
