  Swelling

Swelling is often referred to as edema. Swelling is the enlargement of organs, skin, or other body structures.

Swelling is caused by the build up of excess fluid in tissues. This increase of excess fluids can lead to rapid gain in weight. Swelling can be generalized which is swelling that happens all over the body. Swelling can also be localized which is the swelling of a specific area of the body.

Typically, swelling or edema is depicted as two different types. These two types are pitting edema and nonpitting edema. Pitting edema can be determined by holding a finger on a swollen area for five seconds then quickly letting go. If the left depression fills slowly, the edema is pitting.

Nonpitting edema is also determined by holding a finger on a swollen area for five seconds then quickly letting go. If there is not any depression, then the edema is nonpitting.

In treating swelling, follow your doctor’s instructions for treating any swelling caused by a medical problem. Mild swelling may be treated by resting and protecting the aching area. Elevate the swollen area while applying an ice pack such as the Cold Cherry-Pit-Pac. Refrain from sitting or standing for long periods of time without moving.

A low salt diet may help decrease the swelling. Drink lots of liquids. In hot environments, be sure to keep your skin cool. A Cool Neck Scarf can aid you in keeping your skin cool.
